Extremely Rare Kabbalistic Work! The Kabbalistic Commentary on the

Venice, 1585 . Printed by Giovanni di Gara. Published on Lag BaOmer. A kabbalistic commentary on the Book of Ruth by Rabbi Ovadiah Hamon of Bertinoro, nephew of Rabbi Ovadiah of Bertinoro, the celebrated commentator on the Mishnah. The work was published by Rabbi Mordechai ben Baruch of Tivoli, son-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Hamon, the author’s son. The volume also contains several additional treatises on both the revealed and esoteric aspects of Torah, including Sod HaMalbush, concerning the mystical garment known as Chaluka deRabbanan, by the aforementioned Rabbi Ovadiah Hamon; discourses and teachings by leading sages of Safed, including Rabbi Moshe Galante, Rabbi Yaakov Beirav, Rabbi Yisrael di Curiel, and Rabbi Yosef Sagis; and the Midrash Ruth of Rabbi Menachem Recanati, revised according to a copy transcribed by Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz, author of the beloved hymn Lecha Dodi. Two editions of this work were published in the same year. The present copy is from the second edition. At the beginning of the volume appears an introduction by Rabbi Mordechai ben Baruch of Tivoli, a resident of the Land of Israel and a relative of the author: “I have called thissefer Mikra Kodesh… Although it was previously printed once by the esteemed Rabbi Yechiel (di Montelitz), I have undertaken to print it a second time, since numerous and substantial errors were found therein. I therefore had it entrusted to expert proofreaders, well versed in the wisdom, as I was instructed by the esteemed Rabbi Yehudah Katzenellenbogen… The proofreader was the accomplished scholar Rabbi Yitzchak Gershon, whose words you shall see with your own eyes, following my introduction and completing my remarks…” In practice, however, only the first section of the work (leaves 1–8) was newly printed in this second edition. These leaves were combined with leaves 9–40 of the first edition, retaining its colophon. The newly printed leaves contain additional annotations in smaller type. See Y. Yudlov, Ginzei Yisrael, no. 1065. (Cesena, Italy, circa 1515 – Padua, 1611) was an Italian Jewish rabbi, Rosh Yeshivah, Kabbalist, author, grammarian, and liturgical poet. Born in Cesena, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, he spent most of his life in Padua, where he served as head of the yeshivah, communal secretary, and head of the rabbinical court. He also resided in Bologna and Venice, where he worked as a proofreader. In his youth, he studied under Rabbi Meir Katzenellenbogen of Padua. His most prominent disciple was Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena. The Christian bishop Marco Marini also studied under him. Modena and Archivolti contributed laudatory poems to Marini’s Arca Noae (1593). Rabbi Archivolti took issue with the view of Rabbi Yehudah Halevi, the twelfth-century poet and philosopher, concerning the presentation of biblical narratives in poetic form. Rabbi Archivolti’s most important works are He’aroth LeSepher He’Aruch, supplying textual references on midrashic and talmudic passages cited in the Aruch of Nathan b. Jehiel of Rome (first printed in Venice, 1553); Degel Ahavah, an ethical work (Venice, 1551); Ma’yan Ganim (Venice, 1553); and his major work, a Hebrew grammar, Arugath HaBosem (Venice, 1602). Archivolti used his own poems as models to demonstrate 22 varying metrical forms. For an extensive biography, see “Rabbi Samuel Archivolti: His Life and Writings, Responsa and Letters, ” in Asufot, vol. 7, pp. 69–156. 40 leaves. 13.5 cm. book
