Fang statue: meaning It is generally carved from wood. Human figures often feature a large head, a stylized face, and an elongated body. Some statues were associated with ancestor worship and the protection of the community. The Fang are particularly known for their reliquary figures, called byeri, which were linked to the preservation and protection of the ancestors' relics. Fang sculptures also had a major influence on the history of African art and attracted the interest of many European artists in the 20th century.
