L’œuvre gravé et lithographié de Félicien Rops. Paris: Éditions Pellet, 1928, no. 786 . . Fascinating, like all of Rops's work. Rops's work "had, at its core, a spiritual meaning. Satan triumphant in the place of the Crucified One, Satan as a colossal sower, Satan as a super-male with his great serpent-phallus were the avatars of a myth erected against positivist banality, to vindicate the power of the supernatural in a world disenchanted by science and technology. It was the recovery of the sacred through the obscene and cruel, a sort of return to religion through the back door. In this endeavor, Rops appears as a descendant of Romanticism and as a precursor to the dreams and nightmares of 20th-century art." (Guillermo Solana, EL MUNDO, 2002).
