Description of the work Charming oil on panel executed in the manner of the German painter Felix Schlesinger (1833–1910), a prominent representative of European genre painting in the nineteenth century, especially renowned for his delicate children's and family scenes. The composition depicts two children in a rural landscape, surrounded by wildflowers. One of them, reclining on the grass and dressed in a reddish jacket and dark hat, gazes pensively at his companion, who offers him a small bouquet of flowers. The scene stands out for the naturalness of the gestures, the sentimental character of the representation, and the meticulous treatment of the figures. The brightness of the landscape, the softness of the flesh tones, and the rich chromaticity of the flowers contribute to creating a bucolic and evocative atmosphere. Style, context and influences The work is inspired by the tradition of nineteenth-century German genre painting, particularly the children's compositions developed by Felix Schlesinger and other representatives of the Düsseldorf School. This artistic current achieved notable diffusion during the nineteenth century thanks to its depictions of everyday life, rural customs, and family scenes, frequently characterized by a gentle and sentimental narrative. The painting shows affinities with Schlesinger’s artistic language due to its interest in childhood, the expressiveness of the characters, and the construction of small narrative scenes in rural settings. It is also related to the pictorial tradition of artists such as Ludwig Knaus and Benjamin Vautier, representatives of German genre painting, whose works combined naturalistic observation with a marked narrative sensibility. Attention to detail, the modeling of faces, and the idealized character of the scene evoke the nineteenth-century bourgeois taste for depictions of childhood and daily feelings. About Felix Schlesinger (1833–1910) Felix Schlesinger was born in Hamburg in 1833, into a family linked to painting. He began his artistic training in 1848 under the direction of Friedrich Heimerdinger, later continuing his studies in Antwerp, at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, and in Paris. During his stint in Düsseldorf he received instruction from the painter Rudolf Jordan. Between 1861 and 1863 he worked in Frankfurt am Main, subsequently settling in Munich, where he developed a distinguished career as a genre painter. His output focused mainly on representations of children, family scenes, and episodes of rural life, characterized by careful execution, narrative sensitivity, and attention to human expressions. He regularly participated in exhibitions held in Munich, Dresden, Berlin, and Vienna, gaining international recognition. His childhood scenes were especially appreciated by collectors in England and the United States during the second half of the nineteenth century. Works by the artist are represented in public collections such as the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Milwaukee Art Museum, among other institutions. His body of work constitutes a significant reference within German genre painting of the second half of the nineteenth century. Framing and conservation The work is presented with an elaborate ornate gold frame, classical in inspiration, decorated with vegetal reliefs and moldings that enhance the traditional character of the composition. The frame is included as a gift, with no commercial value, and thus is not part of the painting’s monetary appraisal. The conservation status is what is shown in the photographs, which are an integral part of the description. Packaging and shipping The work will be carefully packaged with suitable protective materials to ensure its safety during transport. Any possible customs charges, import taxes, and local fees will be the responsibility of the buyer where applicable.
