Magnificent and rare patinated bronze sculpture of a tiger in full concentration. Perhaps a dangerous situation is developing or a potential prey is approaching. Gardet is famous for bronze sculptures of tigers and lions but also of crocodiles, dogs, deer, etc. Gardet, the son of a sculptor, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in the studios of Aimé Millet and Emmanuel Fremiet (also a renowned animal sculptor). His wife Madeleine was the sister of the painter and decorator Jean Francis Auburtin, with whom he collaborated on commissions for the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900. In 1900 Gardet was appointed Officer in the Legion of Honor; he was also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Société des Artistes Français. From the mid-19th century up to the Art Deco period, the animal kingdom was an important source of inspiration for artists/sculptors. The sculpture offered here at auction is fairly realistic and superbly cast by the leading bronze founder of the 19th century, Barbedienne. The head of the tiger, with the beautifully detailed rendering of the eyes, snout, and fur, is phenomenal! Good condition. Dimensions: Height 23 cm. Length 57 cm. Width 11.5 cm. Will be shipped by insured/registered mail.
