Empress Elisabeth of Austria, affectionately known as Sisi, had a soft spot for stars: The famous portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter shows her with numerous diamond stars in her hair. She would surely have been tempted by the sight of this beautiful brooch made of Bohemian garnet—a stone from one of the countries she ruled. The antique brooch is designed in the shape of a multi-pointed star. The cut, dark-red garnets are arranged in three tiers. Countless stones in classic rose and star cuts showcase the skill of Bohemia’s gem cutters. The stones are set in tombac, a brass alloy typical of the period that was particularly popular for garnet jewelry. Created c. 1900 and thus more than 120 years old, the star still attracts attention today. It found its way to us from Stuttgart.
