Figure - Guan Yu

Impressive Chinese sculpture depicting Guan Yu, famous general of ancient China who was later deified under the name Guandi. Believed to have been made in the second half of the 20th century in hard wood, probably rosewood, it is entirely carved with great attention to detail. Guandi is one of the most respected figures in Chinese tradition. Considered the protector of warriors, merchants, and the family, he represents loyalty, courage, justice, righteousness, and prosperity. He is venerated in Chinese folk religion and Taoism and is respected also in Buddhist and Confucian traditions. The figure is recognizable by the long beard, the traditional headgear, and the large halberd placed on his shoulders. The face features two small dark stones inset in the eyes, a detail that gives the gaze depth and expressiveness. The robes and body are decorated with numerous floral and cloud motifs, created by inlaying with wire and brass sheet. The metal is inserted into thin engravings made in the wood and subsequently smoothed to the surface level, creating an elegant contrast with the dark color of ebony.
