Fine Art Deco Brooch With Diamonds in Rhodium-Plated Silver, c. 1940s

Dating pieces of jewellery is not always easy. Above all, the details and shapes of the design reveal the date of origin - but sometimes there are other clues. This can be seen very clearly in the case of this brooch. The piece corresponds to a type of jewellery that was particularly popular in the years around 1930: the shield, designed as an elongated oval or polygon. It suited the Art Deco preference for graphic forms, as the large surface could be filled with powerful geometric patterns. Our piece is open-worked, has many beautiful engraving details and presents one beautiful old European cut diamond in the central position, which is accompanied on both sides by smaller 8/8 cut diamonds. The jagged shadow gaps reflect the formal language of Art Deco, as seen in the film sets of early silent movies. Delicate chasing, arabesque saw work and fine milgrains dissolve the forms into a play of white tones with beautiful light and shadow effects. But when was the brooch made? There is a hallmark on the reverse of the piece of jewellery that precisely dates it: Here you can see the so-called "Laurin mark", a hallmark that was introduced in 1936 and used until 1945. (See: "Learn more") Although the fashion of the late 1930s actually favoured jewellery made of gold with larger coloured stones, the type of diamond-set shield apparently remained popular for a long time - and to this day we can understand why! The brooch came to us from Hamburg and is a beautiful, decorative piece of jewellery that stands above fashion.
