Fireplace accessory - Cast iron, Bronze, Brass - chimney bar

Very fine extendable old fireplace bar, also called a hearth bar, featuring an elegant décor of two greyhounds lying down arranged symmetrically at the ends. The whole is particularly decorative: the two dogs are depicted in different poses, resting on substantial black patinated cast iron pedestals, richly moulded. The fronts are adorned with gilded vegetal motifs in relief, while each greyhound wears a finely decorated gold collar. The long central bar, in yellow metal probably brass, is adjustable to fit the width of the hearth. The decoration combining greyhounds, volutes, foliage and gilded elements reflects the taste for Napoleon III style fireplace accessories from the late 19th century. I would, however, advise that, in the absence of a maker’s mark or documentation, the dating be presented as “19th century, probably the second half” rather than stated categorically. Characteristics: Attributed period: 19th century, probably second half Style: Napoleon III Decoration: two lying greyhounds Materials: patinated black cast iron and brass/bronze elements Extensible central bar Closed length: about 90–92 cm Extended length: about 110–112 cm Maximum height at the level of the greyhounds: about 16–17 cm Impressive decorative piece Condition: good overall for its age. Patina, signs of use, small marks, surface wear and occasional oxidations visible in the photographs. The gilded elements show a beautiful old patina. The piece retains much character. An imposing and uncommon decorative fireplace piece, particularly interesting for the presence of the two greyhounds and for the combination of black cast iron with gilded ornaments.
