Crainquebille is a novella by French author Anatole France, first published in 1903, that critiques the French judicial system through the story of an elderly Parisian vegetable seller, Jérôme Crainquebille, who is wrongfully arrested for insulting a police officer. The narrative follows his farcical trial, imprisonment, and subsequent descent into poverty and alcoholism, highlighting the powerlessness of the common man against the state and societal indifference, before a young boy offers him a chance at redemption. The work is known for its irony and compassion and was adapted into a successful play and film.
