"Drawing on the experiences of Janet Frame's early life, Faces in the Water is a harrowing account of life inside the walls of a New Zealand mental institution. The book follows protagonist, Istina Mavet, as she spends 10 years of her life being tossed from ward to ward, observing her fellow patients and living in fear of an ever-dreaded leucotomy. Journeying deep into the human psyche, Faces in the Water is Frame's means of revealing just how misunderstood mental illness was in the 1950s and posing the unanswerable question of what it is to be mad."
