He was an educator, historian and preacher and took over the First Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville, Virginia in 1866, following Rev. William H. McGuffey (of McGuffy Readers fame). He was also an historian, and at one time he owned Arrowhead, an historic property in Albemarle County. He is probably best known for a history of Albemarle County which he published in Charlottesville in 1901.
