[First Edition] The Life of Our Lord Charles Dickens...

[First Edition] The Life of Our Lord Charles Dickens...

Publication: London, Associated Newspapers Ltd., 1934 Formatting: Large 8vo, pp. 127, [1]. Condition Report: Very Good. The volume is tightly and securely bound in its original dark boards, which remain impressively firm with sharp corners and minimal evidence of shelf-wear, suggesting careful handling over the decades. Internally, the text block is square and solid, and the preliminary pages are bright and clean, free from heavy foxing or oxidation. The uncommon textured paper dust wrapper remains entirely complete, but does display some mild edge-wear, subtle sunning to the spine panel, and light surface rubbing, yet it continues to protect the book effectively and presents handsomely. Catalogue Note: This is the first edition in book form. The text is typically accompanied by a half-tone portrait frontispiece and eight full-page plates, alongside decorative chapter initials. While the book itself was printed in large numbers, surviving examples that still retain their fragile, textured paper dust wrappers, particularly in this blue colourway, are quite scarce on the open market. The front preliminary page bears a neat Sunday School presentation inscription to Kenneth Fairhurst, awarded for regular attendance and good behaviour, and dated November 1936, standing as a factual record of its early life as an educational prize. Written by Charles Dickens between 1846 and 1849 exclusively for the private education of his own children, The Life of Our Lord is a heartfelt, simplified adaptation of the Gospel of St. Luke. The manuscript was closely guarded by the Dickens family for over eighty years and was strictly withheld from publication until after the passing of his last surviving child in 1933. Stripped of his usual complex plots and social satires, this unique work reveals an intimate, fatherly side of the legendary Victorian author, reflecting his personal faith and his desire to impart core Christian tenets of kindness, forgiveness, and charity.
