Flavia Delgado - THE GRAND DERBY XL

THE GRAND DERBY is a 70 x 100 cm painting by Flavia Delgado inspired by the tradition of grand horse races, the competitive spirit, and the elegance associated with one of the world's most emblematic sports spectacles. The composition shows a group of riders racing at full speed on the track as they move toward the final stretch. The perspective places the viewer inside the race, following the horses’ motion from behind and creating an intense sense of speed, depth, and emotion. The packed stands and the curve of the track reinforce the vibrant atmosphere characteristic of a major sports event. The artist uses a visually bold, graphic language, built with expressive black outlines, large flat color masses, and clearly defined chromatic contrasts. The intense reds of the track, the electric blues of the sky and some of the horses, together with creams and blacks, evoke the aesthetics of mid-20th-century advertising and sports posters, reinterpreted from a contemporary viewpoint close to pop art. Beyond the depiction of an equestrian competition, THE GRAND DERBY reflects on ambition, effort, and the pursuit of excellence. Each horse and rider symbolize the perseverance needed to reach a goal, while the race becomes a metaphor for human impulse to move forward, improve oneself, and compete with oneself. The visual energy of the work arises from the rhythm of the moving figures, the repetition of silhouettes, and the dynamic perspective that guides the viewer through the scene. The result is an image full of narrative tension, capable of conveying both the majesty of equestrian sport and the emotion of the decisive moment. With its striking aesthetics and strong evocative power, THE GRAND DERBY brings dynamism, sophistication, and character to any collection of contemporary art.
