A tall six-panel Japanese folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) with a Kanô School-style painting of an extensive Chinese-inspired landscape, executed in ink 墨絵 (sumi-e) on a gold-leaf ground. The composition is concentrated mainly across the lower part of the screen, leaving a broad expanse of shimmering gold above. Dramatic rocky peaks rise in the distance, while a temple complex is nestled along the mountainside. Below, the landscape opens onto a broad tranquil lake with small sailing boats, fishing craft and a settlement along the shore. Flights of birds cross the open sky. The screen is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame. Signed and sealed in the lower right ‘Bokushinsai hitsu’ 牧心斎筆. Bokushinsai was an art name associated with Kanô Yasunobu 狩野安信 (1614–1685). The signature should not, however, be taken as an attribution to Yasunobu himself; this is a later work executed in homage to the Kanô tradition. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926). Dimensions: Height 177 cm, Total width 378 cm (2 × 64.5 cm and 4 × 62.2 cm). In very good restored condition with traces of age on both sides, including touch-ups to the gold leaf, particularly along the edges, and old traces of woodworm activity. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
