A charming antique wooden rocking horse with an expressive horse head and beautifully hand-painted decoration. The horse is richly decorated in a traditional folk-art style, featuring a carved mane, painted saddle and harness details, and an atmospheric pastoral scene across the lower body depicting figures, trees and countryside. The predominantly cream-coloured surface is enhanced with warm red, green and brown tones, with extensive hand-painted detailing and traces of gilding. The decoration has developed an attractive aged patina, with visible craquelure, paint wear and losses that add to its authentic antique character. The construction and decoration give this piece a particularly decorative, theatrical quality, making it an appealing example of antique children’s furniture/toy craftsmanship and folk art.
