FONT-RÉAULX (Dominique de). — The Daguerreotype. Paris, Musée d'Orsay; Milan, 5 Continents Éditions, 2008. Small square octavo (approx. 16.5 × 16.5 cm), paperback, illustrated photographic cover, 96 pp., 61 color illustrations. “Photography at the Musée d’Orsay” series, No. 11. ISBN 978-88-7439-465-4. A publication dedicated to the Musée d’Orsay’s remarkable collections of French daguerreotypes, by Dominique de Font-Réaulx, then a specialist in 19th-century photography at the museum. The book accompanies the exhibition *The French Daguerreotype: The Musée d’Orsay Collection*, presented at the Musée d’Orsay from May 27 to September 7, 2008. The volume traces the development of this first commercial photographic process, unveiled in 1839, in which a single image is produced on a metal plate. It showcases the diverse uses of the daguerreotype—portraits, nudes, genre scenes, and compositions—and reproduces several remarkable pieces from the collection, including some acquisitions published here for the first time. Numerous full-page reproductions, particularly interesting for the history of early photography and the photographic portrait in the 19th century. A good copy. The interior is clean and fresh. The cover shows fairly numerous scuffs and scratches, particularly visible on the front cover, as well as slight marks at the corners.
