Fossil Dawn Redwood - Fossil carapace - Metasequoia sp.

A beautiful fossil plant specimen attributed to Metasequoia sp., the famous dawn redwood, dating from the Oligocene of Inner Mongolia, China. This attractive specimen preserves delicate foliage impressions, with clearly visible leaf structures and fine details contrasting beautifully against the natural light-coloured sedimentary matrix. The fossil is presented on a compact matrix measuring 5 cm in length, making it an elegant and fascinating addition to a collection of prehistoric plants. A Living Fossil from an Ancient Forest Metasequoia is one of the most remarkable genera in the history of palaeobotany. Known from the fossil record before living trees were scientifically recognized, it became famous following the discovery of surviving populations in China during the 20th century. Today, only one living species, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, survives, while fossil representatives of the genus were once widespread across the Northern Hemisphere. During the Oligocene, ancient forests supported a diverse range of conifers and other plants, providing valuable evidence of prehistoric climates and ecosystems. Collector's Interest Fossil foliage of Metasequoia offers a fascinating connection between prehistoric forests and one of the world's most celebrated living fossil trees. This specimen is particularly attractive for its delicate botanical details, natural presentation, and contrasting coloration. An appealing Oligocene plant fossil, ideal for collectors of fossil flora, ancient conifers, and palaeobotanical specimens. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description. Scientific name: Metasequoia sp.
