Fossilized Megalodon Shark Tooth, 5.74"

Fossilized Megalodon Shark Tooth, 5.74"

Ancient Seas, Middle Miocene to end of Pliocene eras. A fossilized tooth of Otodus megalodon, the largest macropredatory shark the oceans have ever produced. The broad triangular crown tapers from a deeply notched bilobate root to a fine apex, its labial face glossed in gunmetal and bronze mineral tones acquired during burial, the lingual face paler and satin-smooth. A dark chevron of bourlette, the band of root enamel seated above the crown, arcs cleanly across the upper blade, and serrated margins run the length of both cutting edges. Teeth of this scale come from the anterior positions of an adult jaw, a dentition that replaced itself continuously through life and shed thousands of teeth into the seafloor sediments where they mineralized. Supplied with a custom stand that presents the specimen upright. Otodus megalodon ranged the world's temperate and tropical seas from roughly 23 to 3.6 million years ago, through the Miocene and Pliocene, before vanishing as ocean cooling and the rise of competing predators closed on its nursery grounds. Because cartilaginous skeletons rarely survive burial, the species is known almost entirely from its teeth and a scattering of vertebral centra, and body-length estimates (commonly cited between 15 and 18 meters) are extrapolated from tooth crown height. Anything over five inches is scarce; the figure has long been the collector's threshold between a good tooth and a serious one. Coloration is a function of the burial matrix rather than the animal, with iron and phosphate minerals substituting into the dentine over millions of years, which is why teeth from different beds carry such distinct palettes.
