Fr. 1073a. 1914 Red Seal $100 Federal Reserve Note. New York. PCGS

Fr. 1073a. 1914 Red Seal $100 Federal Reserve Note. New York. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20. A rarity from the New York district and one representative of a short-lived type whose end is often wrongly attributed to the effects of the First World War rather than the chemical nature of the overprint. This $100 Federal Reserve Note features the short-lived red Treasury overprint that was discontinued come 1915 and represents a denomination seen only sparingly at best. Rich colors and a distinct level of eye appeal are retained by this specimen contrary to those encountered at the lowest ends of the grading spectrum. By a similar measure, the engraved elements of the design including the right-facing portrait of American polymath Benjamin Franklin and the allegorical assemblage on the verso that was the work of Kenyon Cox comes largely unmarred by circulation and serves to offer further testament to the level of retained eye appeal. Indeed, it takes little to reason that this is a truly a great example for the collector who has long sought to build a denomination set reflective of this short-lived type that is seldom seen compared to successive counterparts.
