Fr. 18. 1869 $1 Legal Tender Note. PMG Very Fine 30.

Fr. 18. 1869 $1 Legal Tender Note. PMG Very Fine 30. In technical terms this is your quintessential example of a mid-grade note with a modicum of light folds. Here the bold red impression of the spiked Treasury Seal and the vibrant blue swaths of color accentuate the reason for the never ending popularity of the so-called "Rainbow" Legal Tender Notes issued under the Series of 1869. This here is nonetheless a well-margined example that also features a partial plate number "21" seen in the top margin. This plate number appears a little different than others we have seen from this series but further research is required. In our Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction we sold another example graded Very Fine 30 by PMG that realized a robust $3,416 (Lot 22002) once the hammer fell and your cataloger sees no good reason why anything should be different here in the present with regards to this handsome specimen. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500. Click here for certification details from PMG.
