Fr. 351. 1891 $1 Treasury Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Treasurer Daniel N. Morgan Courtesy Autograph. Simply a lovely note laden with eye appeal and no shortage of premium qualities. This $1 Treasury Note that bears the engraved portrait of War Secretary Edwin Stanton is not merely a fortunate survivor on account of the grade assigned by PMG, but rather the circumstances that likely prompted its preservation and kept it away from commercial channels. Likely saved through sheer circumstance by a banker or someone who could afford to save it, this note features the penned Courtesy Autograph of Daniel N. Morgan who served as Treasurer under the second non-consecutive term of President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897. Morgan a banker and merchant by trade, led a fairly successful and long life and was in the position to sign many notes after his tenure at the Treasury Department ended. This combined with the fact that Treasury Notes are rare hosts for Courtesy Autographs regardless of the denomination or signature combination make this a rare opportunity for the collector who specializes or enjoys collecting courtesy autographs. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
