Fr. 361. 1890 $5 Treasury Note. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ. A handsome and lightly handled $5 Treasury Note issued under the Series of 1890. One would be remiss not to be enthralled by the many attractive qualities of this specimen and the one-off portrait of one of the Union's most overlooked personalities. Much can be said of Thomas's career and actions. Thomas nonetheless fought with distinction on the battlefields of Tennessee and Georgia and it was here that he earned the honorific nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga." Even though the Confederate Army was able to claim victory at Chickamauga, Thomas saw that the Union's defeat here did not become a hopeless rout. His portrait may also be seen alongside the engraved signature of his one-time superior William S. Rosecrans whom he fought alongside from Stones River (Murfreesboro) to Chickamauga. Rosecrans following the war led a fairly mundane political career before his death in 1898. His service as Register of the Treasury continued through the administration of Benjamin Harrison before retiring and spending his remaining years in California. Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
