A lightly handled example of a design that went by the wayside once the Series of 1869 was introduced. This $5 Legal Tender Note does nonetheless represent a rare entry in numismatic terms thanks to the fact that this note represents an error of sorts. Here one may behold not only a comment that states "Offset Printing of Signatures on Back," but also what that entails as the engraved signatures of Chittenden and Spinner can be observed on the back and can even be read with relative ease against the back design. Held together with the fact that this note has earned a numerical grade of "55" makes this lot all the more remarkable in relative terms. Examples of this type and denomination contemporary to the American Civil War are often represented by unsightly culls that sustained numerous impairments in circulation which therefore allows this lightly circulated example to stand tall with ease among its fellow survivors.
