Charles Boirau (1889-1949) « IN AFRICA » — A set of 22 old illustrated postcards France — Publisher R. Prudent, Paris — Circa 1925-1935 An interesting set of 22 old illustrated postcards attributed to the French designer Charles Boirau (1889-1949), an artist known for his satirical compositions devoted to colonial Africa. The cards feature humorous scenes, characters, landscapes and situations of colonial life, rendered in a graphic style characteristic of the artist. The illustrations are printed in sepia brown and black on light paper and carry the printed signature « Ch. Boirau ». HERITAGE INTEREST Charles Boirau was an illustrator active during the first half of the 20th century. His works bear witness to the French artistic and satirical production related to colonial territories. An exhibition devoted to his work was organized by the association Images & Mémoires in 2015. Copies of the En Afrique series are also held in the collections of the National Museum of African Art of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington. This set constitutes a testimony to the history of French illustration, caricature, and colonial representations of the interwar period. The scenes reflect the satirical conventions and racial stereotypes of their time, which today gives them documentary interest for the study of colonial imagery.
