apoleon Bonaparte – First Consul – Signed Official Document – Electoral College of the Doubs – 1804 Exceptional French official document from the Consulate period, relating to the Electoral College of the Department of Doubs and signed during the government of Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul. Official document of the French Government, printed and completed by hand, regarding the convocation and organization of the Electoral College of the Doubs department, whose session was to be held in Besançon. The document is dated in Paris, 14 Pluviôse year XII, corresponding to 3 February 1804, a few months before the proclamation of the Empire. The text sets out the provisions relating to the meeting of the Doubs Electoral College and the various operations to be carried out, including the designation of candidates for the Conservative Senate, the Corps législatif, and the Departmental General Council. Signatures The document bears the handwritten signature “Bonaparte”, under the printed form “LE PREMIER CONSUL”, together with the signatures of: Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul. Jean-Antoine Chaptal, Minister of the Interior. Hugues-Bernard Maret, Secretary of State. The gathering of these three signatures on a single official document constitutes a particularly interesting testimony of the operation of the French central administration under the Consulate. Collège électoral du Doubs and Moncey The document is directly related to the organization of the Collège électoral du Doubs, an institution presided over by the general and future marshal Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey, Duke of Conegliano. The accompanying certificate expressly identifies the document as: “Collège électoral du Doubs” and states the provenance as: “Château de Vaivre.” This provenance is particularly interesting given that documents from the Collège électoral du Doubs published in a 2019 sale concern the descendants of Marshal Moncey, Château de Vaivre. Certificate and documentation The document is accompanied by: Certificate of authenticity by J.-M. Genot (J.M. Genot, Belgium). Additional handwritten note signed “JMG”. Provenance documentation indicated in the certificate. The certificate identifies the piece as related to the Collège électoral du Doubs and mentions Château de Vaivre as the provenance. Characteristics Era: French Consulate. Date visible on the document: 14 Pluviôse year XII / 3 February 1804. Place: Paris. Number of pages: 2. Dimensions: approximately 28.5 × 43.5 cm. Language: French. Support: period paper. Technique: typographic printing with handwritten completion. Signatures: Bonaparte, Chaptal and Maret. Watermark: visible when viewed against light. Conservation: good overall condition, considering age, with creases and handling marks typical of an early 19th-century administrative document. Documentary note The accompanying certificate refers to a date of 6 December 1803, whereas the handwritten date that appears on the document is 14 Pluviôse year XII (3 February 1804). This difference is expressly indicated so that the buyer has full documentary information about the lot. An original large-format piece, especially interesting for collectors of Napoleon Bonaparte, French Consulate, historical autographs, Napoleonic administrative documents, and material connected with Marshal Moncey. Genot (Belgique). Note manuscrite supplémentaire signée « JMG ».
