Important historical French bronze medal dedicated to the abandonment of privileges during the session of the National Assembly on 4 August 1789, a major event of the French Revolution. The obverse features a relief portrait of Louis XVI turned to the right, surrounded by the legend: “LOUIS XVI RESTORER OF FRENCH LIBERTY”. Under the portrait stands the signature “B. DU VIVIER S.”, corresponding to the engraver Benjamin Duvivier. The reverse presents a particularly detailed composition depicting the National Assembly and the abandonment of privileges. Around the scene the inscription reads: “ABANDON DE TOUS LES PRIVILEGES”. In the center, on the altar, is inscribed: “A LA PATRIE”. In the lower part the inscription reads: “ASSEMBLEE NATIONALE – IV. AOUT – MDCCLXXXIX”, corresponding to 4 August 1789. The reverse composition is signed Gatteaux. The medal is distinguished by its pronounced relief and the great fineness of its details, notably in the portrait of Louis XVI, the clothing, the figures of the Assembly and the architecture depicted on the reverse.
