The Author: Francesco Panigarola Francesco Panigarola was one of the most important Italian Catholic preachers of the second half of the sixteenth century. Born in Milan in 1548, he joined the Order of Friars Minor Observants and developed an extraordinary oratorical activity, preaching in numerous Italian and European cities. His importance lies not only in the religious content of his works, but also in his ability to transform preaching into an elaborate form of rhetorical communication, meant to persuade, move, and instruct contemporaries at the same time. Panigarola was also closely tied to the milieu of Carlo Borromeo, a central figure of the Catholic reform in Milan. In 1582 he moved to Milan precisely by Borromeo’s wishes, and in the following years he developed a significant portion of his pastoral and literary activity in that environment. The very title of the book is meaningful: the Hundred Reasonings are presented as having been made “in Milan” by Panigarola, for a commission and in the presence of Cardinal Borromeo. This is therefore not a work born in a generic religious environment, but a text deeply connected to Catholic Milan in the second half of the sixteenth century. What the work contains The subject is the Passion of Christ, but the work is not simply an evangelical narrative. Panigarola takes the different moments of the Passion and transforms them into a succession of “reasonings,” that is, meditative and argumentative discourses aimed at religious formation. The original structure contemplated four sections: - the capture of Christ and the events in the garden; - the ecclesial trial and what happens before the pontiffs; - the secular trial and the events before Pilate; - the execution of the sentence and the path to Calvary. This scheme is interesting because it follows almost a narrative and theatrical progression: arrest → religious trial → civil trial → condemnation and execution. The Passion thus becomes at once a narrative, meditation, moral teaching, and rhetorical exercise. The historical context: the Counter-Reformation To truly understand this book one must place it in the period after the Council of Trent (1545-1563). The European Renaissance was deeply unsettled by the Protestant Reformation initiated by Luther and by the subsequent religious fragmentation of Europe. The Catholic Church responded through a broad internal reform process, doctrinal definition, and reorganization of pastoral work. The Council of Trent established a series of principles destined to profoundly modify Catholic religious life. Carlo Borromeo was one of the most important figures in the concrete application of these reforms. After the Council, he worked to discipline the clergy, improve religious instruction, and strengthen the spiritual formation of the faithful. Treccani defines him, within the framework of his Milanese activity, as a central figure of the Counter-Reformation. And it is precisely in this environment that Panigarola’s preaching gains meaning. The link with Carlo Borromeo The connection between this work and Carlo Borromeo is one of the most historically interesting aspects of the volume. The title itself specifies that the reasonings were pronounced in Milan, by commission and in the presence of Cardinal Borromeo. Borromeo died in 1584, just two years before the Neapolitan edition we are identifying. This means that the book belongs to a particularly significant moment: its first typographic dissemination occurs precisely as the Borromean era in Milan is consolidating its legacy. Panigarola, moreover, after Borromeo’s death delivered his own funeral oration. The relationship between the two men was therefore not marginal, but an integral part of the intellectual and religious biography of the author. A book born in the age of religious printing The volume is also interesting from the point of view of the history of printing. In the sixteenth century printing had radically transformed the circulation of religious ideas. The very phenomenon that had allowed Reform texts to spread rapidly was used by the Catholic Church for its pastoral activity. Panigarola’s book is an excellent example of this process. We are not facing a simple manuscript destined for a small monastic community: we are facing a printed work, republished and circulated in several editions. The first publication of the Hundred Reasonings dates back to 1585, with editions in Genoa and Venice; numerous reprints followed, including the Neapolitan edition of 1586 that corresponds to the volume you photographed. The fact that a preaching work was transformed into a large printed volume is therefore a testimony to the growing importance of religious literature as a tool for formation and communication. A link with the European religious wars Panigarola’s story did not remain confined to the strictly ecclesiastical sphere. His activity took place in a Europe torn by religious wars and by confrontation between Catholicism and various Protestant confessions. Treccani recalls, for example, his activity against the diffusion of Calvinism and his subsequent involvement in the France of the Wars of Religion: in 1588 he was sent by Sixtus V to Paris and remained in the city during the siege, supporting with his eloquence the reasons of the Catholic League against Henry IV. This is an important link because it shows how Panigarola’s figure can be read on two levels: - the book on the Passion originates from Catholic religious preaching, but the author belongs to a generation of clerics involved in a confessional conflict that concerned all of Europe.
