Francis Hopkinson 1779 Signed Sight Draft

Revolutionary War-era partially printed and manuscript sight draft dated October 19, 1779, signed by Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791), a signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey. The document orders payment of $60, equivalent to 300 livres tournois, to William Sharp, drawn upon the Commissioner of the United States at Paris. Boldly signed "Fras. Hopkinson" in his capacity as Treasurer of Loans, with a countersignature at lower left. Hopkinson was a member of the Continental Congress, a lawyer, writer, musician and artist who played an important role in the early development of American national symbols, including the design of the American flag. This document dates to the Revolutionary War and reflects the financial arrangements supporting the American cause through its representatives in France. The document has a large, well-defined signature, with some toning, staining and edge wear. Attractively framed and matted beneath an engraved portrait of Hopkinson. Not examined out of frame.
