In the manner of Francisco Domingo Marqués (Valencia, 1842 – Madrid, 1920) Scene of musketeers Oil on canvas 19th-20th centuries Important oil on canvas of large dimensions, executed in the manner of Francisco Domingo Marqués (1842–1920), a prominent Spanish painter of the XIX and early XX centuries. The work clearly captures the Valencian artist’s taste for historical-scene settings and types inspired by the XVIIth century, a particularly characteristic facet of his output. The composition presents an intense narrative scene starring two men dressed in the manner of the XVIIth century. On the left there is a character with a military or musketeer appearance, elegantly dressed, with a broad feathered hat, glove and sword, turning toward the second protagonist. The latter appears seated or reclined against a stone wall, adopting a gestural and expressive attitude that introduces narrative tension into the scene. The painter gives special importance to the characterization of the figures and the theatricality of the encounter. The confronted gazes, the gestures of the hands, and the contraposed arrangement of both figures suggest a specific episode whose narration remains open to the viewer’s interpretation. The architectural setting, dominated by large ashlar blocks and earthy tones, creates a space of historical character and provides a sober backdrop against which the figures stand out. Particularly striking is the character positioned on the left, whose attire introduces some of the main chromatic elements of the composition: the hat with a large reddish plume, the white collar, the belt details, and the reflections of the sleeves contrast with the predominant dark and brown tones. The work shows a historicist and genre-painting language, with special attention to clothing, expressions, and environmental recreation. Its considerable format — 88 × 120 cm without a frame — gives the scene a significant presence and allows the figures to develop within a wide pictorial space. In the lower right corner there is a signature or inscription, visible in the photographs. The work is presented, however, prudently as executed in the manner of Francisco Domingo Marqués, without attributing its direct execution to the master. Francisco Domingo Marqués and historical-themed painting Francisco Domingo Marqués was born in Valencia in 1842 and died in Madrid in 1920. He trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia and later continued his studies in Madrid. After his early successes he obtained a pension from the Valencia Provincial Council that allowed him to complete his studies in Rome. From a very young age he stood out in painting of composition and historical themes, developing a special interest in scenes featuring characters dressed according to the fashion of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. Within this strand his work “Un lance, siglo XVII” — a lance, seventeenth century — painted in 1866 and currently conserved at the Prado National Museum is especially significant. This type of composition demonstrates Domingo Marqués’s early interest in recreating the Spanish Golden Age, historical dress, and scenes with a strong narrative component. His painting was initially linked to the great Spanish pictorial tradition, with influences from masters such as Ribera, Velázquez and later Goya. As his career progressed, his technique evolved toward a freer, more expressive and colorful execution. After settling in Paris, Domingo Marqués achieved significant international recognition, especially among European and American collectors. His contact with the French artistic milieu also contributed to enriching and progressively modernizing his pictorial language. This combination of Spanish tradition, historical reconstruction and nineteenth-century sensibility explains the considerable popularity his compositions reached and the existence of works carried out later following his models, themes and language. Francisco Domingo Marqués also received important institutional recognition, becoming a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and becoming a prominent figure in Spanish painting of his time. Style and technique The present work is inscribed within Spanish nineteenth-century historicist painting, following models directly related to Francisco Domingo Marqués. The composition stands out for the contrast between the two figures, the care taken in recreating historical clothing, and a palette dominated by ochres, earth tones, browns and blacks, enlivened by whites, greens, and reddish hues. Lighting concentrates principally on the characters, allowing faces, hands and garments to be individualized against the darker environment of the architecture. The brushwork alternates descriptive zones with more free, expressive passages, especially noticeable on the walls, fabrics and certain secondary elements. The result is a work of great decorative presence and marked narrative character, closely related to nineteenth-century European taste for scenes inspired by episodes, settings and figures from earlier centuries. Measurements Unframed: 88 × 120 cm. With frame: 103 × 134 cm. Thus, it is a painting of considerable format, a circumstance that greatly increases its visual presence. Condition report The work shows a state of conservation in keeping with its age, displaying some imperfections, wear and signs derived from the passage of time, all of which are noticeable in the photographs. The canvas presents some slackness in its tension, so it could benefit from re-tensioning carried out by a professional, thereby improving the uniformity and presentation of the surface. The photographs form an integral part of the description and it is recommended to examine them carefully to assess the precise condition before placing a bid. Important information about the frame and shipping Due to the large dimensions of the framed set (103 × 134 cm), the work will be sent without a frame. The dimensions of the set exceed the limits allowed by the shipping systems associated with Catawiki for this lot, so the shipping will include only the painting. The frame that appears in the photographs is not included in the shipment. However, the buyer may personally collect it completely free of charge, if desired. The canvas, without frame, measures 88 × 120 cm. In short, this is an imposing large-format historicist composition, executed in the manner of Francisco Domingo Marqués and closely related, in theme and concept, to the Valencian master’s taste for seventeenth-century ambient scenes. Its format, narrative richness and strong visual presence make it a particularly attractive piece within Spanish nineteenth-century historicist painting.
