Auction without reserve!!!!! Franco Balan (Aosta, October 30, 1934 – Aosta, April 14, 2013) was an Italian designer. Activity “In the history of Italian graphic design, Balan is certainly an anomaly, a unique and extraordinary case. (Mario Piazza) [1]” Franco Balan was a painter and graphic designer who mainly worked on posters and coordinated imagery. Honorary member of AIAP (Italian Association of Visual Communication Design), Italian member of AGI, ADI, and the Académie Saint-Anselme. He designed posters (about 3000), mainly for cultural initiatives in his region, the Valle d'Aosta, and over the years collected an archive of drawings, sketches, and doodles. Since the 1970s he was among the graphic designers who energized the Public Utility Graphics movement. He organized exhibitions of designers and illustrators from all over the world, as well as regular shows at La Salle, which featured, among others, Albe Steiner, Roland Topor, Milton Glaser, Grapus, Shigeo Fukuda, UG Sato, Bruno Munari, Franco Grignani, and Roberto Sambonet. “The Franco Balan figure always invites us to play and have fun. He brings cheer. Faced with this extraordinary, eternal child, with his naivety, his flashes of genius, the vast, almost endless production of art and graphic objects, one is left with the unconfessed and undeniable desire to play again. To play with words, but especially with colors, with figures that come and go, return, appear and disappear in the works with a disarming and complex simplicity.[2]” His experience continues today, in Aosta, by his son Joël, in the studio on Via Xavier de Maistre. During his career, he won several prizes, including: - United Nations Prize for Graphics in 1978 - Design of the logos and signage for the Gran Paradiso National Park - Creation of the logo for Espace Mont-Blanc - Creation of posters for the XX Olympic Winter Games Exhibitions In addition to numerous shows in Aosta, he exhibited at the Wilanów Palace Museum, in Tokyo in several venues, at the Lahti Museum in Finland, in Rome, Barcelona, and Martigny. He created the Génération XX exhibition for the Alliance Française.
