Francois Julien Doyen

Set of 10 Antique French Sterling Silver Cocktail / Hors d’Oeuvre Picks – François Julien Doyen – Paris – Napoleon III Period – Circa 1860–1880 – 950 Silver An elegant and unusual set of 10 antique French solid silver serving picks, dating from the second half of the 19th century, during the Napoleon III period. Crafted in Paris by the French silversmith François Julien Doyen, active during the 19th century. Each pick is made of high-quality 950/1000 sterling silver, bearing the French Minerva head hallmark, first standard, together with the silversmith's maker's mark. Design & Decoration The ten picks feature a refined, minimalist design with long, slender, gently tapering bodies ending in a pointed tip. Each piece is fitted with a small circular ring at the upper end, providing an elegant decorative detail while also allowing the picks to be held or suspended. Their understated elegance is characteristic of fine French silver table accessories from the second half of the 19th century. Original Use These small silver picks were most likely intended for serving and enjoying small delicacies at the table. They could be used for: Olives, pickles and cocktail garnishes. Small hors d'oeuvres and appetisers. Cherries, preserved fruits and other small delicacies. Elegant individual servings during aperitifs and receptions. Such refined silver accessories were part of the sophisticated French dining culture of the 19th century, particularly during the Napoleon III and Belle Époque eras. Today, they would make a beautiful addition to an antique silver collection or an elegant aperitif table.
