Frank Romero (Mexican-American, b. 1941), Carro con Corazon (Car with Heart). This hand-carved wooden sculpture depicts a vintage sedan finished in oil paint. The object features a polychrome surface in shades of red, orange, and yellow with blue and green accents, applied with heavy, impasto-style brushstrokes. A detachable heart-shaped element sits atop the roof, securing into a pre-drilled hole with a wooden peg. The car is constructed with four integrated wheels painted in white and grey. The work is dated 12/87 and bears a dedication: To Bonnie and Alan. Signed F. Romero USA. Frank Romero is a pioneering figure of the Chicano Art Movement and a founding member of the influential collective Los Four, which helped bring Mexican-American and East Los Angeles cultural narratives into the national contemporary art conversation during the 1970s. Romero is best known for his vibrant imagery of lowriders, urban life, and cultural identity, often infused with humor, heart, and bold color. His work is held in major museum collections and remains iconic within American and Latinx contemporary art history.
