signed 'F. Knebel' l.l., inscribed and dated 'Roma 1855' l.r., watercolour heightened with white, 25 x 37.5cm; framed 45 x 60cm, Franz Knebel the Younger (1809–1877) was a Swiss-born painter who settled in Rome at the age of thirteen, training under his godfather, Franz Kaisermann. He became closely associated with the Grand Tour, producing atmospheric views of Rome and the surrounding Campagna for visiting travellers. The ancient monuments and aqueducts of the Roman landscape were among his favoured subjects, enabling him to combine topographical accuracy with picturesque effects of light and atmosphere. Dated 1855, 'Aqueduct of Claudius, Rome' exemplifies Knebel's celebrated views of the Campagna, depicting the monumental remains of the ancient aqueduct within a pastoral setting.
