FRANZ VETTER (1886–1967) Damenporträt (Portrait of a Young Woman) Gotha, 1925 Pastel on stiff cardboard Dimensions: 79 x 63 cm in frame Painting: 67 x 51 cm The cartouche applied to the verso reads: “Damenporträt, Öl auf Pappe, signiert Franz Vetter Gotha 1925. Franz Vetter 1886 Halle – 1967 Gotha, späte Weimarschule.” Translatable as: “Portrait of a Woman, oil on cardboard, signed Franz Vetter, Gotha 1925. Franz Vetter, 1886 Halle – 1967 Gotha, late Weimar School.” The author Franz Vetter, also known as Franz Vetter-Gotha, was a German painter, graphic artist and author. Born in Giebichenstein in 1886, he studied painting and art history in Halle between 1907 and 1910 and later at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Kassel, where he completed his training between 1910 and 1913. Specialist sources also indicate a period at the Kunstschule in Weimar. From 1914 Vetter was permanently based in Gotha, where he carried out artistic and teaching activities in parallel. His role in the city’s cultural life is particularly significant: in 1922 he participated in founding the Künstlervereinigung “Die Garbe”, an association of artists resident in Gotha, of which he was president. The Handbuch des Kunstmarktes of 1926 records him as “Franz Vetter, Maler und Radierer”, painter and etcher, president of Garbe and resident at Doebelstraße 9. The date 1925 of our painting thus holds some interest: precisely in 1925 “Die Garbe” organized a Kunstschau in Gotha. We have no elements to connect this specific portrait to the exhibition, but the work belongs exactly to that phase of Vetter’s career. Historical-artistic analysis The painting presents a half-length portrait of a young woman, slightly turned relative to the frontal axis. The figure emerges against a background built through broad vertical fields of dark green and a central brown-ochre area, which creates a chromatic stage around the head. The composition is intentionally essential: the artist relinquishes any narrative or environmental element to concentrate attention on the psychological presence of the sitter. Particularly characteristic is the construction of the face. Vetter does not pursue photographic naturalism; instead he proceeds through fairly clear chromatic masses and chiaroscuro. The eyebrow arches and eye sockets are deeply shaded; the nose is defined through a strong light-dark contrast, while a delicate pinkish note on the cheek introduces a chromatic vibration in the flesh. The hairstyle is resolved with broad, synthetic brushstrokes, without minute description of individual strands. Very effective is the relationship between the brick-red of the dress, the deep green of the side bands and the warm ochre of the background. The result is a severe and restrained image, distant from fashionable portraiture and more focused on the subject’s inner character. Stylistic framing The work fully belongs to the German figurative culture of the 1920s. One perceives the author’s academic training and at the same time a progressive simplification of form derived from post-impressionist and German Expressionist experiences. The brushwork remains controlled, but the modeling is built mainly through tonal relationships and masses of color. The old indication on the cartouche, “späte Weimarschule” (“late Weimar School”), is therefore interesting as historical attributive testimony, though today it is preferable not to use it as a rigid critical classification. Modern sources nonetheless confirm Vetter’s period at the Kunstschule in Weimar. Frame The frame visible in the photographs appears chronologically compatible with the early 20th century, plausibly placed between the 1910s and 1930s, and thus potentially coeval with or adjacent to the painting’s execution. It is characterized by a carved wooden structure with continuous relief decoration: stylized floral motifs in the inner band and vegetal/foliage motifs along the outer band. The dark finish with gilded highlights produces a deliberately antiqued effect. “period frame, likely coeval or slightly later than the work.” Condition Report Overall state of conservation: fair/good for the age. From inspection the pictorial surface appears essentially stable and legible. Natural age-related changes, light abrasions and surface inconsistencies, small marks and deposits, as well as a varnish seemingly altered/yellowed that may have partially modified the original chromatic balance. Abrasion present on the bottom edge of the painting (see photo). The rigid support appears overall stable from the available photographs. The frame shows normal wear, small cracks and localized losses of decoration and finish, compatible with age. The cartouche on the back exhibits pronounced aging of the paper, folds, marginal tears and gaps, but remains largely legible. *** Photographic note Some photographs of the work were taken with professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of composition, details and the painting’s material. Such lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only. The frame is provided free of charge with the work and should be regarded as an accessory element, not included in the economic assessment of the painting. Given the natural fragility of antique and gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss of frame parts occurring during transport or shipment cannot be subject to refund, compensation or dispute concerning the work’s value. The packing will, however, be prepared with the utmost care to ensure as safe a transport as possible. Shipped insured Attribution Expert Report *** For historical interest the work cannot be shipped outside the European Community / insured shipment in a wooden crate
