FRENCH COLONIES. 1721-B Sou, or 9 Deniers. Rouen Mint. Martin 1.1-A.3, W-11825. Rarity-4. VF-30 (PCGS). 97.7 grains. Well centered for the type with universally bold to sharp detail throughout the design. Some old, inactive verdigris clings to many of the design elements on both sides, right obverse border and central reverse also with a number of planchet pits. There are no troublesome post-production marks, however, and the color is pleasing in rose-brown on the obverse, deeper chestnut brown on the reverse. This is the most "American" of the myriad French colonial coin types, the Rouen Mint issue of 1721 far rarer than those of 1721 and 1722 from the La Rochelle Mint. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the John L. Roper, 2nd Collection of Colonial & Early American Coins, December 1983, lot 190. The reverse is plated in the 2015 Martin reference on French coinage specifically for colonial America, p. 292. PCGS# 170192. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
