FRENCH COLONIES. 1767-A Sou. Paris Mint. Breen-700. No RF Counterstamp. AU-55 (PCGS). 171.4 grains. Nice, warm olive-brown patina overall, the reverse with blushes of reddish-rose at and near the upper border. (PCGS has mounted this coin backwards in the holder.) The surfaces are trivially granular, but present as hard and smooth in most viewing situations, definitely free of serious accidental marks or other signs of handling that require mention. This piece is sharply struck overall and remarkably well preserved, far nicer than the vast majority of these known. It was cataloged by Mike Hodder as one of "the finest the cataloguer has ever seen" for the type in our (Stack's) Ford XIII sale. These sous were struck as a general issue for France's remaining overseas possessions after it lost Canada to the British through the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ended the Seven Years' War. Pieces without RF, as here, are significantly scarcer than those with the counterstamp. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII, January 2006, lot 27; Heritage's sale of the Troy Wiseman Collection, Part II, January 2007 FUN Signature Sale, lot 88. PCGS# 158651. NGC ID: 2AYL.
