France, late 19th century (circa 1870-1900). A striking Sevres-style cobalt blue porcelain vase of baluster form, mounted with finely cast and gilt bronze (ormolu). The body is decorated in a rich deep bleu de roi glaze, accented by elaborate ormolu mounts including a pierced laurel border at the rim, acanthus-leaf collar, scrolling side handles terminating in foliate masks, a decorative band to the shoulder, and a square ormolu plinth base. The elegant proportions and luxurious combination of cobalt porcelain and gilded bronze reflect the taste for Louis XVI-inspired decorative arts popular during the French Second Empire and Belle ‰poque.
