Fritz Maierhofer, a pair of gold earrings, London, circa 1987, each designed as a girder in gold, hook fittings, length 5.3cm, signed Maierhofer 87, gross weight approximately 7.5 grams Cf.: a pair of girder earrings in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no. M.66-1988 The Austrian sculptor Fritz Maierhofer started a residency at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Arts, London - the first metalsmith to do so, in 1986. He lived in the Barbican and was inspired by the huge construction projects the city was undergoing at the time. The steel girders he saw heavily informed his designs during this period, exemplified by this pair of earrings.
