All auctions / Silver & Gold / FROM BURGHLEY HOUSE. A very rare George III Pie Dish made in London

The dish has a very unusual shallow oval form, with flared sides and an everted rim. The dish is very well marked and is of an excellent gauge and weight. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest, flanked by supporters, with the Coronet of a Marquess above. The distinctive Crest is that of the Cecil family, Earls of Exeter. The date of assay identifies the arms as belonging to the household of Henry Cecil (1754-1804), 10th Earl of Exeter, who was created Marquess of Exeter in 1801. Cecil inherited the vast estates at Burleigh, and the earldom, following the death of his uncle, Brownlow Cecil 1725-1793, the 9th Earl. As you will appreciate, this is a most useful, and unusual, dish and its design lends it to many uses on the dining table. The quality of production is also very fine, which is not surprising as it was made by John Edwards III. His work is of superior quality and A.G. Grimwade in "London Goldsmiths 1697-1837" states that "The surviving work bearing any of his marks shows a high standard of design and execution". He was for sometime in partnership with William Frisbee, who had been in partnership with Paul Storr, therefore he must have been in the circle which included the young Storr. He was working from premises at 1, Bridgewater Square, Barbican, when this piece was made. Length: 11 inches, 27.5 cm. Width: 7.5 inches, 18.75 cm. Height: 2.25 inches, 5.63 cm. Weight: 18.5oz.
