All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / Fruit bowl - Original 1930 Art Deco centerpiece pedestal in acid-etched glass
Splendid and authentic Art Deco fruit dish / centerpiece stand dating from the 1920s–1930s. A vintage furnishing piece with great charm and solidity, perfect for enriching a table or sideboard with a touch of rétro elegance. The object stands out for its typically architectural and geometric line, faithful to the stylistic canons of the period: • Upper bowl: Made of fine pressed and satin-etched glass in a warm amber/peach color. It features a refined radiating spoke pattern that culminates in a wavy flower-petal edge. • Supporting base: A dramatic structure consisting of four fluted pillars resting on a stepped circular base. The mount is made of period metal (antimony/zama) with a beautiful original patina that testifies to its authenticity. Details on manufacturing and glassworking The plate of this fruit dish evidences one of the most celebrated and beloved decorative techniques of the Art Deco period. The matte, velvet-to-the-touch finish was achieved through chemical etching, a process of the era that allowed the glass to absorb and diffuse light softly, enhancing the amber coloration and highlighting the geometric relief of the petals. The spoke-like form and the corona edge were created by press-mforming the molten glass, an avant-garde technique in the interwar years. This type of unsigned home production was typical of the great European manufactories of the era (such as the historic French Bohemian-style, Boheme, or German ateliers like Stölzle and Ankerglas), which produced these elegant decorative elements paired with solid geometric metal frameworks. An authentic fragment of 20th-century industrial design history. Condition of the item The fruit dish is in good overall vintage condition. The glass is perfectly intact, without chips or cracks. The metal structure is very solid and stable; it shows the typical pitting and superficial oxidation due to time, a feature that guarantees its absolute authenticity and era, differentiating it from modern reproductions. Like much of the home manufacturing output of that period, the object bears no visible signatures or marks. Exact dimensions • Total height: 25 cm • Diameter of the glass bowl: 23 cm Safe shipping and packaging I guarantee professional and meticulously careful packaging. For clear reasons of bulk and above all to best protect the piece during transport, the fruit dish will be shipped disassembled. The glass plate will travel separately from its metal base, protected by ample bubble wrap and cushioning materials. Reassembly by the buyer is immediate, safe, and very easy: simply screw the central pin to securely join the two components. They display some metal tarnishing that does not compromise the beauty.
