Extraordinary photograph by maestro Fulvio Roiter (1926-2016). Photolithograph, 40 x 50 cm, in excellent condition, signed in the original, bottom right. Fulvio Roiter (Meolo, November 1, 1926 – Venice, April 18, 2016) was one of the most important Italian photographers of the twentieth century. After qualifying as a chemical technician, he chose to devote himself to photography, turning his passion into a profession in 1953. In 1949 he joined the Venetian photography club La Gondola, where he had the opportunity to interact with photographers such as Paolo Monti. In 1953 he carried out an important photographic journey to Sicily: the images he produced allowed him to gain international recognition. The following year he published his first book, Venise à fleur d'eau. In 1956 he won the prestigious Nadar Prize with Ombrie, terre de Saint-François. For many years he favored black and white, dedicating himself mainly to travel reportage and to the representation of daily life and landscapes. Later he also used color. The city to which he remained most closely tied was Venice, which he photographed throughout his life, seeking unusual aspects, atmospheres, lights and shapes. His most famous book, Essere Venezia, published in 1977, achieved enormous international success and helped make his images of Venice known worldwide. During his career Roiter produced numerous reports in Italy and abroad and published about a hundred photobooks. He died in Venice in 2016, at the age of 89. In summary: Roiter is remembered above all for his poetic way of photographing Venice, landscapes and people, transforming documentary photography into images characterized by great attention to light, composition and atmosphere.
