Gaetano Esposito (1858-1911)

Gaetano Esposito (1858-1911)

Portrait of a young Neapolitan woman with flowers Oil Signed or inscribed on the lower left Interesting female portrait executed in oil and attributed to the Italian painter Gaetano Esposito, a distinguished representative of the Neapolitan school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The work depicts a bust-length young woman, slightly turned to the right and looking at the viewer. The model appears with dark hair gathered on both sides of the face and adorned with reddish flowers, a device that introduces a note of color and reinforces the Mediterranean and popular character of the image. The composition concentrates almost exclusively on the portrait and the sitter’s expression. The young woman shows a slight smile, resolved with naturalness and without excessive idealization, which brings immediacy and spontaneity to the whole. The artist pays special attention to the gaze, the highlights of the flesh tones, and the tonal variations of the hair. The execution is characterized by a broad, loose, clearly visible brushstroke. The face is built up with overlapping touches of ochres, pinks, earth tones, and whites, while the hair is resolved with dark masses enriched by bluish and brownish reflections. This technical freedom lends movement and a marked pictorial vitality. The vegetal background is treated with impastoed, fragmentary brushstrokes, with a rich range of greens, yellows, and ochres. Its less descriptive execution allows the figure to stand out and creates a luminous atmosphere, typical of Southern Italian painting. From a stylistic standpoint, the work relates to Neapolitan naturalism and to Italian genre painting of the late 19th century. The direct observation of the model, the interest in popular types, and the combination of realism and pictorial spontaneity find parallels in the known oeuvre of Gaetano Esposito. affinities with Antonio Mancini’s painting can also be perceived, an artist close to Esposito and especially relevant in the development of a portrait characterized by freedom of brushwork, psychological intensity, and richness of painting material. Biographical sources note Mancini’s influence on Esposito, particularly in his genre scenes and depictions of popular Neapolitan characters. In the lower left area there is a signature or inscription that appears to correspond to the surname “Esposito,” although its reading and authenticity have not been documentarily certified. For this reason, the work is prudently presented as attributed to Gaetano Esposito. About the artist Gaetano Esposito was born in Salerno on November 17, 1858 and died in Sala Consilina in 1911. He came from a family linked to the seafaring world and received his first artistic instruction from the Salerno painter Gaetano D’Agostino. His talent was subsequently recognized by Domenico Morelli, who favorableIy admitted him in 1872 to the Real Instituto de Bellas Artes de Nápoles (Royal Institute of Fine Arts of Naples). In Naples he trained in the circle of Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi, and Stanislao Lista, fundamental figures of the Italian artistic renewal of the 19th century. Although he began with a solid academic training, he evolved toward a more direct and naturalistic painting, based on careful study of reality. He largely devoted himself to portrait, genre scenes, depictions of popular characters, landscape, and seascapes. In his mature works he developed an immediate language, with notable expressive force, with particular interest in human types and the everyday environments of Naples. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and received important recognitions. He also undertook significant decorative commissions, including works for the Caffè Gambrinus in Naples, the Garibaldi Theater of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, and the Palace of the Stock Exchange in Naples. At the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair he won a gold medal for a large marine composition. His painting is characterized by the use of a lively brushstroke, complex tonalities, and strong light contrasts. In portraits and genre scenes he combined naturalistic observation with a free pictorial matter, progressively moving away from the more rigid academic formulas. Condition The work shows signs typical of its age, with possible scuffs, superficial grime, craquelure, small losses of painting, wear, and old restorations or reintegrations. It is recommended to carefully examine the photographs, as they form an essential part of the description and allow appreciating the true state of conservation. The frame is sent as a gift, with no commercial value. It may show scuffs, dents, finish losses, cracks, restorations, or defects arising from its age and use. The frame’s condition will not be grounds for claims. The artwork will be carefully packed to ensure proper protection during transport. Customs duties, tariffs, import taxes, handling charges, and any other charges required in the destination country will be the sole responsibility of the buyer. Shipping may incur additional charges in countries requiring customs procedures or special import management. The seller is not responsible for possible delays, holds, or incidents arising from customs procedures.
