The piece is a half-moon gaming table (commonly called a demi-lune table or a fold-out console), antique and of Italian or French manufacture, dating from the first half of the 19th century (19th century / Romantic period). The reference style is Neoclassicism, with strong echoes of the sober, elegant lines of the Louis XVI period and the subsequent Directory/Empire style. Compared with the earlier baroque splendors, this style favors symmetry, clean geometric shapes, and inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity. Structural Analysis and Function The furniture is designed with a dual decorative and functional nature, intended for salons of the upper bourgeoisie or the aristocracy of the 19th century: The Console (Closed): When the table is placed against the wall, it presents itself as a refined space-saving console. The upper surface has a perfect semicircular shape (half-moon). The Gaming Table (Open): The top consists of two mirrored panels joined by concealed hinges. For use, the central rear leg (or a compasso-style structure integrated into the frieze) is pulled outward to provide support. The upper semi-top flips open like a book by 180°, transforming the console into a perfectly circular coffee table, historically used for card games, reading, or tea service. Supports: The table rests on slender square-section legs, known as needle or truncated pyramidal legs. This tapered-down form lightens the furniture and elongates its silhouette. Decorative Details and Hardware The ornamental apparatus is restrained and concentrated at the focal points of the piece: Central Frieze: In the center of the under-top frieze stands a finely chased bronze ornament, either gilded or bronze‑ened. It depicts a laurel garland (or crown) tied at the bottom by a graceful ribbon with a bow. This motif symbolized glory, wisdom, and eternity, and it was one of the most beloved decorations of the Neoclassical period. Leg Applications: On the top of each leg (the junction block with the frieze) is applied a small geometric and floral element coordinated in bronze (a rosette or a small decorative “dado”), which serves to break the verticality of the wood. Current Condition of Preservation From the images, the piece appears structurally sound and retains an excellent original patina, but shows the usual signs of age: Wood Surface: The top shows slight dulling and superficial scratches from use (including a faint circular impression on the open top). The wood appears to be a fine material (likely walnut, mahogany, or veneered in dark woods). Signs of Time: On the legs and frieze are small wood-borer holes. The appearance of these holes (dark and without fresh chipping) suggests an old, inactive infestation, typical of antique furniture that has lived in non-air-conditioned environments.
