Maxime Weygand — Reading the War Memoirs of General de Gaulle — exemplary dedication and signed Paris, Flammarion, 1955. A work by Maxime Weygand, member of the French Academy, devoted to his critical reading of General Charles de Gaulle's War Memoirs. The work runs approximately 236 pages according to bibliographic notices. The copy bears the printed designation “Vingtième mille” on the cover. An autograph dedication at the heart of the controversy On the title page, Maxime Weygand wrote a handwritten dedication to a recipient named Michel, whose surname is difficult to decipher in the photograph. He explains that while reading de Gaulle's memoirs, he felt that “a clarification was necessary,” then signs Weygand. This inscription is particularly interesting because it is not limited to a courteous formula: it sums up the very motive of the book. Weygand responds personally, with his own work and his own hand, to de Gaulle's accounts of the events of 1940. The autograph thus gives the copy a direct link to the historical controversy it documents. The disagreement between Weygand and de Gaulle In June 1940, as the French army was retreating before the German offensive, General de Gaulle defended the idea of continuing the fight, notably by transferring the government and the available forces to North Africa. Weygand, by contrast, believed that military and logistical means did not permit continuing the war effectively there and supported seeking an armistice. After the publication of the first volume of de Gaulle's War Memoirs, Weygand contested several of his statements, notably the account of their meeting and the interpretation of the decisions taken in June 1940. His 1955 book develops his response in a documented and argumentative tone. The disagreement thus concerns both specific facts and a major question: Could France have continued the war from North Africa in 1940?
