George Weller, Exon (Exeter), an early walnut longcase clock, the eight-day duration movement having ringed movement pillars, an anchor escapement and striking the hours on a bell with an inside countwheel with the thirteen-inch square brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic outer five-minute numerals, fleur-de-lys half-hour markings and engraved either side of VI o'clock with the maker's name George Weller, Exon, the matted dial centre having ringed winding holes, a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with cast-brass cherub-head spandrels to the four corners and wheat-ear border engraving to the outer edge, the walnut veneered flat-top case with cross-banding to the trunk and base, a fretwork frieze to the hood, cast-brass Corinthian capitals to the hood pillars and all standing on bracket feet, height 223cm. Notes: George Weller is recorded as working in Exeter in the early-to-mid 18th century and was known to have looked after the Exeter cathedral clock from 1718, when he was paid his Quarterage at Mich for looking after ye clocke 5s, until about 1742. Other church clocks he worked on included a payment of £15 in 1726 for new making the Clock & Chimes for the South Molton church clock.
