The whole picture seems to move. Georges Berger (1908–1976), a Norman by birth, settled in Montmartre and became a close friend of Gen Paul, the great Expressionist of the Butte; the two painted the same streets, cafés and markets, and Berger’s hurried, calligraphic touch, his spare palette pierced by sudden bursts of colour, shows how much the friendship shaped him. Montmartre, Honfleur and the quays of the Seine were his lifelong themes. Signed ‘Berger’ at the lower left.
