His monumental work, Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, consisting of 36 volumes published between 1749 and 1789, was the first attempt to gather all knowledge of the natural world in a single systematic work. It was an immense editorial success, read not only by scientists but by the European aristocracy. Guillaume-Philidor Van den Burggraaff (born in Brussels in 1790) was an important engraver, draftsman, and Belgian master lithographer. He played a fundamental role in the dissemination of art printing and scientific publishing in the Southern Netherlands (the future Belgium) during the first half of the nineteenth century.
