Germaine BOURET (1907-1953) Landscape at the edge of a lake Pastel on paper Signed at the bottom left Dimensions: 29 x 19 cm —————— Germaine Bouret, born in Paris on May 29, 1907 and died January 25, 1953, was a French illustrator famous for her drawings of children with chubby cheeks, large expressive eyes and mischievous expressions. A lifelong passion for drawing from childhood, she won a national contest in 1922, then briefly worked for the fashion house Jeanne Lanvin. In 1927, she founded Éditions Bouret and devoted herself to illustration. Her work, imbued with tenderness and humor, enjoyed wide diffusion thanks to postcards, engravings, calendars and children's books. She also produced numerous advertising illustrations for brands such as Nestlé, Blédina and Lesieur. Among her works is Nounouk, published in 1945. Her twin brother, Marcel Bouret, wrote the captions accompanying her drawings. Noticed by Walt Disney, who supposedly offered her to join his American studios, she chose to continue her career in France. She died prematurely at 45, leaving a popular body of work that has influenced several generations.
