All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / German school (XIX) - El Velo de la Verónica / Santa Faz de Cristo - 60 x 47 cm

- Large size: 60x47 centimeters. Gran drawing in grisaille of a religious nature representing the Veil of Veronica, also known as the Holy Face: the frontal face of martyr Christ, crowned with thorns and wrapped in a cloth or veil. The elevated gaze, the expression of contained suffering, and the meticulous modeling of the hair, the beard, and the crown of thorns give the image an intense devotional dimension. The composition alludes to the Christian tradition according to which Veronica gave a cloth to Christ during the Way to Calvary, and His face was miraculously imprinted on it. The motif is related to one of the most venerated relics in Christianity. The work is executed on light brown-toned paper using charcoal or black chalk, with significant touches of white chalk to model the lights of the face, the forehead, the eyelids, the hair, and the cloth. This contrast between dark and white creates a strong grisaille effect, where Christ's visage seems to emerge from the veiled background. In terms of theme, spirituality, and technique, the drawing sits within the German and Central European religious tradition of the 19th century, particularly close to the sensibility of the Nazarene movement. The Nazarenes sought a renewal of art through the recovery of Christian, medieval, and Renaissance ideals, and established an influential artist community in Rome from 1810–1811. Friedrich Overbeck was one of the central figures of this movement. The work is offered as signed “Charles Rouget,” according to information provided by the seller. However, no public documentation has been located that would allow establishing a reliable biography for the artist or reliably linking him to the Nazarene painters mentioned. For this reason, the signature and authorship should be assessed by the buyer from the photographs and their own expert judgment. Condition: the paper shows waviness, folds, stains, surface dirt, oxidation spots, and small marginal losses or tears. A white support or mounting strip is also visible on one side. The work is sold in its present state, recommended for restoration, consolidation, and professional mounting. The photographs are an essential part of the description and clearly reflect the state of conservation. A piece of great format and visual impact, especially attractive to collectors of sacred art, European religious drawing, Passion iconography, and grisaille works of the 19th century or Nazarene taste.
